Chhour Intervention Sees Barnardo’s 0800 What’s Up Hotline Continue

Minister for Children Karen Chhour has stepped in to ensure Barnardos can continue its 0800 What’s Up hotline amidst Oranga Tamariki’s review of social service provider contracts.

Mrs Chhour expressed disappointment with Oranga Tamariki’s handling of the process, stating it did not meet her expectations. She instructed Oranga Tamariki to collaborate with Barnardos to maintain the service for families and children.

She emphasized her respect for Barnardos and their crucial community work, criticizing Oranga Tamariki for putting them in a difficult position.

Oranga Tamariki has been reviewing contracts to address under-utilized services, eliminate duplication, and align with core priorities. However, Mrs Chhour criticized the poor communication and engagement, which caused unnecessary disruption.

She has asked Oranga Tamariki to pause the review and extend existing contracts until 31 December 2025, providing more certainty for providers and allowing for broader government input on social service contracting practices.
