Straight up Wellington now the Number One Destination for Queer People

Will Wellingtonians cope with it’s new mantle of being the number one “queerest destination” in the country?

The Southland town of Gore reacted negatively back in 1997 when Radio Dj’s Mikey Havoc and Newsboy (Jeremy Wells) labelled the town as the Gay Capital of New Zealand.

Wellington has recently been named by Lonely Planet as the best destination for LGBTQI+ families and alongside the likes of Chicago, Toronto, Palm Springs and Copenhagen.

The capital has been showcased in Lonely Planet’s new LGBTQ+ Travel Guide under ‘family-friendly festivities’.

The LGBTQI+ travel market is growing every year and by 2030 it’s predicted that spending by queer travelers will reach nearly US$570 billion.

“For LGBTQ+ families, choosing the ideal vacation destination goes beyond just beautiful scenery and fun activities for all ages. It’s about finding a place where everyone in the family feels welcome and able to truly be themselves.

“These unforgettable experiences offer a safe, inclusive environment where LGBTQ+ families can create cherished memories together.”

Lonely Planet highlighted New Zealand as “a pioneer of LGBTQ+ rights” with Wellington “known for its progressive and inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated and embraced year-round.

“The city is home to ample queer-friendly experiences that are not just welcoming but fun for the whole family.”

The book then lists a variety of destinations including the beaches of Oriental Bay, Paraparaumu, Scorching Bay, and Lyall Bay, as well as popular tourist attractions like Wētā Workshop, the Wellington Chocolate Factory, the Botanic Gardens and, of course, the Cable Car.

Todd Barberel, GM for destination and marketing at WellingtonNZ, said he was delighted at the city’s inclusion: “Wellington proudly welcomes all visitors. “It’s that special combination of people and place that gives Wellington it’s charm and we look forward to welcoming more manuhiri here to experience all we have to offer.”

Craig Watson, who is a board member for Rainbow Wellington and event director for the Wellington Pride Parade, agreed it was great to see the city featured.

“We love Wellington! It is a city that not only welcomes the world, we also welcome our own LGBTQ+ people, giving them a fun, safe city to express themselves fully.”

Elsewhere in the book Queenstown also gets a mention under ‘adrenaline-pumping adventures’.
