In a tragic incident on Friday, a festive Christmas market in Magdeburg, Eastern Germany, was struck by chaos when a car was driven into a crowd in what is believed to be a terrorist attack.
Between 60 and 80 individuals have been injured, with several in critical condition. Multiple reports, including those from German public broadcaster MDR, confirmed that at least two people have died, one reportedly a child.
Saxony-Anhalt’s Interior Minister, Tamara Zieschang, informed the media that the suspect is a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who arrived in Germany in 2006.
The suspect reportedly drove around 400 meters through the market, though this has not been confirmed by the local police. The authorities have taken to social media to confirm that extensive police operations are ongoing at the scene.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his solidarity with the victims and their families, saying, “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. Our thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”
The incident recalls previous attacks in Germany, including the 2016 Berlin Christmas market tragedy, where an Islamist jihadi drove a truck into the crowd, murdering 12 people and injuring 50 others.
