Following months of pressure the Board of Pharmac announced today that Sarah Fitt, who has served as Chief Executive for the past seven years, has resigned. Her resignation will be effective from May 30, 2025.
Fitt becomes the fourth health boss to go this month. Director-General of Health Dr Diana Sarfati announced two weeks ago she’d step down, following in the footsteps of Director of Public Health Dr Nicholas Jones and Health New Zealand chief executive Fepulea’i Margie Apa.
This news marks the end of an era for Pharmac, as Fitt has been a pivotal figure in the organization for a total of 12 years, including her previous five years in senior executive roles.
The Board and Pharmac expressed their deep appreciation for Fitt’s dedication and leadership. During her tenure, she spearheaded numerous significant projects and strategic initiatives, leaving an indelible mark on the organization. “We are immensely grateful for Sarah’s unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions,” the Board stated. “Her leadership has been instrumental in driving our mission forward.”
Sarah Fitt herself shared her thoughts on her departure, expressing her excitement for future endeavors. “I am looking forward to new challenges and opportunities,” she said. “I leave Pharmac with a sense of pride and gratitude for the incredible journey we’ve had together.”
Her resignation comes amidst a backdrop of significant changes within Pharmac.
Last year, Chair Paula Bennett announced a “short and sharp” review into the organization’s internal staff culture and its external relationships with patient groups. This review aimed to address concerns and foster a more positive and collaborative environment within the organization.
Asked if the board had lost confidence in Fitt, Pharmac chairperson Paula Bennett said “no, I wouldn’t say that”.
Bennett said Fitt resigned a few days ago, her reasoning being that she had reflected and was going to look for a new opportunity.
Associate Health Minister David Seymour also acknowledged Sarah’s resignation, thanking her for her service. “I would like to extend my gratitude to Sarah for her dedication and hard work over the years,” he said. “Her leadership has been crucial in navigating the complexities of our healthcare system.”
As Fitt prepares to take a period of leave in April and May, the Board of Pharmac will soon commence its search for a new Chief Executive. The organization is poised for a new chapter, building on the foundation that Sarah has helped to establish.
Sarah Fitt’s last day will be May 30, 2025.
